The Department of Botany started its journey in 2015. Honours course was introduced in 2016. At present the department has an intake capacity of 29 students per year. The department follows the course designed by the West Bengal State University and offers a holistic understanding of the study of plants.

The Birbal Sahani Lecture Theatre and Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Lecture Theatre are spacious, well ventilated are ICT-enabled.
Laboratory and Research Facility
The department has three well-equipped laboratories, Panchanan Maheswari Laboratory, Janaki Ammal Laboratory, and Rosalind Franklin Laboratory, along with the Barbara McClintock Instrumentation Facility with state-of-the-art facility for research in different fields of Botany.

Library
The department has a well-stocked seminar library with rich collection of National and International books.
Medicinal Plant Garden
The department maintains a medicinal plant garden of 300 sq. ft. area in the college premises with rich collection of medicinally important herbs, shrubs, and trees.
E-library of the Department
Teaching includes lectures, tutorials, extensive practical sessions and field visits. Teachers use chalk-and-talk method together with PowerPoint presentations and use of different audio-visual aids. Students’ seminars are regularly organized to improve their presentation skills. Teachers give hand-outs to the students and the department also has a good collection of books. Each year students are taken for an intensive field visit to a different phytogeographic region as well to botanical gardens, industries and horticulture societies for a better understanding of the subject.
The department conducts Continuous Assessment through class interaction, and practical performances of the students. At regular intervals, students are requested to appear for surprise tests, and they occasionally participate in students’ presentations and discussion sessions.
